How Fresh Flowers Help You Blossom
A scientist at Harvard Medical School has identified how a bouquet of fresh flowers can improve your mood. In fact, fresh flowers improve the mood and energy of everyone who comes into contact with them. Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D. is a researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. She writes in her behavioral research that people feel more empathetic toward others and are less anxious. Additionally, they are much less likely to experience form of depression when they are around fresh flowers. In addition to the delightful living blossoms lessening anxieties, fresh flowers enhance one’s energy, happiness, and enthusiasm.
A recent study of the home ecology of flowers at Harvard University cites:
- Flowers chase away anxieties, worries and the blues at home.
People reported lower levels of negativity in the home when flowers were present. Participants placed the flowers in the areas of their home where they spent the most time in, such as the kitchen, dining room and living room. - Flowers feed compassion.
Study participants who spent time around freshly cut flowers for less than a week felt an increase in feelings of empathy and kindness for others. - Spending time near flowers can provide a boost of energy, happiness and enthusiasm at work.
Having flowers in one’s living space has a positive carry-over impact on mood at work. The study cites that people were more likely to feel passionate and energetic at work when flowers were in their households.
Etcoff says about her research:
As a psychologist, I’m particularly intrigued to find that people who live with flowers report fewer episodes of anxiety and depression. The study points to the fact that flowers have a positive impact on our well-being.
